doesnt it help make the ball more lightweight and be thrown farther?

The first time I heard of it was in the mid 1970’s when Raiders opponents accused Madden of doing that so that Ray Guy’s punts would stay in the air longer.
BTW the Mythbusters did a segment on helium in a football and they showed that it makes no appreciable difference.
